Meet Herogen: Delivery Hero's In-House AI Engineer

Berlin-headquartered Delivery Hero has pulled back the curtain on Herogen, an autonomous AI software agent built entirely in-house. According to the company's press release, Herogen already delivers the annual coding output of 130 senior engineers — and it's only deployed to 18% of the company's development teams so far.

What makes Herogen stand out is how it operates. Engineers assign tasks in plain natural language, and Herogen handles the rest: writing, testing, and iterating on code before submitting it for review. A so-called "council of agents" — multiple large language models from different providers — cross-checks the output from several angles. A human then gives the final sign-off. The result: an 85% success rate on pull requests, with most tasks requiring zero or just one human interaction.

The numbers are impressive. Herogen merges more than 100 code change requests per day, freeing up an estimated 250,000 engineering hours annually. Delivery Hero aims to have Herogen handle 20% of all code change requests by the end of the year.

But the bigger story here isn't efficiency — it's transformation. Delivery Hero's CTO Benjamin Mann describes Herogen as a tool that lets engineers "solve the hardest problems" rather than getting bogged down in repetitive tasks. The goal is to shift developers from programmers to system architects, working in natural language rather than wrestling with syntax.
