Berlin's Patronus Raises €11M for a Smarter Senior Watch

A smartwatch that seniors actually want to wear sounds simple. But according to Patronus, it took over a thousand conversations with older adults to figure out why existing emergency alert systems were failing so badly.

The answer, as Berlin-based AgeTech startup Patronus discovered, was never a technology problem. It was a dignity problem. Traditional emergency buttons have been around for decades, yet studies show only 14 percent of users wear them consistently. Patronus reports a figure of 85 percent among its 25,000 active users. The difference? A device that looks like a real watch, comes in multiple colors, and does not scream "medical equipment."

Now the company is backing that approach with fresh capital. Patronus has secured more than €11 million in a funding round led by 3TS Capital Partners, with participation from Grazia Equity and existing investors including Singular, Burda Principal Investments, Adjacent, NAP, and UVC Partners. According to the company's press release, the funds will go toward expanding its leadership in mobile emergency response and developing new product lines, including an AI companion designed to address senior loneliness.

That second ambition tackles a sobering statistic: 12 percent of people over 75 in Germany have no personal conversation on an average day.

Patronus, founded in Berlin in 2020, has already answered more than half a million emergency calls. Its companion app keeps 50,000 family members connected to their loved ones without the stress of constant check-in calls.

With 9.6 million people over 75 in Germany alone and 47.4 million across Europe, the market is only growing.
