Airwallex Bets Big on Berlin With €31M Investment

Airwallex is co-headquartered in San Francisco and Singapore with over 2,000 employees across 26 offices.

Berlin just added another heavyweight to its fintech roster. Airwallex, one of the world's leading financial platforms for businesses, has officially launched in Germany — and it's betting big on the German capital. According to a report by Startbase, the company plans to invest €31 million over the next five years, with Berlin-Mitte as its local base.

So what exactly does Airwallex do? Think of it as a financial operating system for companies that do business across borders. Need to pay a supplier in Tokyo, collect revenue from a client in New York, and manage it all in one dashboard? That's Airwallex's sweet spot. The platform enables payments in more than 180 countries, offers multi-currency accounts at interbank exchange rates, and processes 68% of transactions instantly.

For the German market, Airwallex is rolling out a localized suite of services: German IBANs with euro accounts, real-time payments via the European wallet Wero, and a native DATEV integration to simplify accounting workflows. Early adopters in Germany already include Navan, Moss, WorkMotion, and Debtist.

Tom Sellin, a fintech veteran with stints at Rocket Internet, PayPal, and Afterpay, is leading the DACH expansion as Head of Growth. His goal: win several thousand active business customers in the near term and significantly scale the local team from 2026 onward.

The German launch comes on the heels of a €280 million Series G funding round that valued Airwallex at €6.9 billion.

Berlin, Germany's leading fintech hub, was the natural choice for the company's DACH expansion.
